I'm so excited to be posting today to celebrate this year's Shorts on the Line sewalong courtesy of Small + Friendly and Imagine Gnats. Thanks to Carla and Rachael for putting this fun sewalong together! While it is Clever Charlotte's second round of Shorts on the Line, it's my first time doing the sewing and I'm so excited to show you what I've done.
When the girls reached out to me to do a post for the project, I was thrilled and selfishly decided to make something for myself rather than the usual kid project. Here's my inspiration:

This gorgeous little number captured my eye months ago and I love how the linen-look fabric parts in the front and hangs over an under skirt. I figured I could make something similar for a pair of shorts.
I'm generally not fond of two-legged garments that end above the ankle as they display my increasingly doughy knees, but as it is summer I figured brave the short shorts.

The pattern was drafted from my jean sloper circa 2004, and really needed to be increased a size. Oh well, please forgive the tightness. I added such tedious details a the zipper fly and welt back pockets, but the effort I put into the welts was well worth it. I find welt pockets are the best for breaking up the expanse of fabric across the rear.

I added a panel that emerges from the side seam and wraps to the front. It is tacked into the waistband but otherwise provides some movement down the leg. The shorts are made out of a linen from my favorite source, Gray Line Linen. The piping is a bit of Liberty fabric I had leftover from another project.
Evelyn saw this picture and said, "Mom, you look tired." So true, Evelyn. So true. But at least I finished my project. Thanks Rachael and Carla for the little push to make some fun shorts!
